Week 7 Discussion Question

What are the pros and cons of advertising?

Breanna I

Pro – Advertisement can be used to bring people together or inform people about a great new product that could make your everyday life easier.  These are all great uses of advertising.  It can also be used to promote nonprofit organizations and other such programs.  ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTkfNb9o2wU ) I enjoy this christmas commercial from target.  It has a simple message that is clearly delivered.  Even Santa knows to run to target to get all of his last minute shopping done.  This commercial has a great combination of humor and clear message delivery.

Con – On the other side advertisements can be rude or disrespectful to it’s viewers.  Many times a poorly put together advertisement can invoke very powerful feelings and opinions among different groups of people.  These advertisements can have potentially detrimental affects on the company or product. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmdaB21E2tY )  This commercial has nothing in it about what Go Daddy.com is all about.  It does however have a very sexual tone as she is ripping off her clothes and getting her white tank wet.  It certainly isn’t a tasteful advertisement and certainly will turn away a large portion of its non-male audience.

Good examples of the pros and cons of advertising. You seem to have a good grasp on the concept and it shows. Good work. P.s I agree with you about the Go Daddy commercials… its like, what the heck is Go Daddy even? For the longest time I had no idea, but now I know and think the commercial is even more pointless.

I think that you have an excellent grasp of the pros and cons of advertising. And you’re right about the Go Daddy commercial; I think they need a new PR team. I don’t think that your post needs any improvement. Great work.
