What are the pros and cons of advertising?
Advertising helps all of us gather a large variety of information about a product, event, or group. Information such as cost, where you can purchase/sign up/donate/attend, why you should, details about the product, and various other data. I think this aspect of advertising is a good thing. However, this information is not always relevant to the product or the company. For example, GoDaddy.com is a internet domain registrar and web hosting company that uses sex appeal for promotion.
Another bad thing about advertising is that it can play on people’s emotions (pathos). One advertising campaign in particular that I cannot stand is conducted by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). I love the cause, but nobody wants to see slow motion, zoomed in camera shots of horribly abused cats and dogs. They also match the video with really sad music, creating a double-whammy of sadness.
