Week 10 Concept

Effects of Media:  Limited Effects

Well the limitation of media is that a complete story cannot be formed without all/most of the facts to the story.  If stories are based on the opinions of others and not the hard facts to the story, they would lose viewers, and their credibility.  An example of this would be http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/03/cnn-poll-romney-wins-debate-by-big-margin/ which is an article about what the people thought about the presidential elections.  Granted it was supposed to contain the people’s opinions, but according to their survey, only about 500 people were surveyed on their opinions yet it was called a nation-wide survey.  Another example of media losing credibility would be this YouTube video about fox news, but it is not the only news station using this method of “sourcing”, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYA9ufivbDw.  Since they do not have any concrete information and are just speculating, it makes them look unprofessional and hold less trustworthiness.

I agree. Credibility is a huge issue in the news. I also liked your political example. I don’t think that your post needs any work. Great job.

I think we are sort of getting at the same points here. I mention how the viewers can take what they want from the meaning of a story but you are simply looking at the other side of the story. The writers can also make what they like out of a story that they produce. A 500 person survey can hardly be stated as a proper nationwide survey.

Good example. I like the points that you made especially in reference to the political debates. Because it is a known factor that credibility varies throughout those advertisements.

  4. Good example with the loss of credibility when there is only speculation going on. Somehow some programs speculate 99% of the time and are still able to have success. ESPN does this with a lot of programs and it is because of the celebrities and people of interest they bring into their studio that allows them to get away with it.
