Procrastination got the best of me in Week 10

Which of the five types of convergence media do you understand least – and how does it affect you?

Multi-platform convergence makes the least sense to me. I understand that it is companies operating in ways that create a win-win situation, but I don’t understand the steps a company would take in order to decide which company to make a deal with. Obviously, utilizing another companies publics in order to spread more awareness of your own company is beneficial. But deciding which company would be difficult. Using a competitor’s resources would be the most desired, but I doubt that would happen. For example, if I’m a clothing retailor, it would be hard to decide which company to target. Everyone wears clothes, but what company’s customers would want to buy my specific style of clothes? It sound like massive audience analysis is necessary!

Week 11 Discussion

How is political speech expressed in social media? Provide some examples that you have seen, or been involved in.

An example of how political speech is expressed in social media is the growing use of Twitter in Saudi Arabia, used to criticize and express dissatisfaction with the Saudi government.

It has been widely reported that in the Middle Eastern countries such as Tunisia and Egypt are using social media for political purposes. Because of the ease of the communication and the relative anonymity given by social media,  these conversations may reveal valuable insight into the actual public opinion and reactions regarding specific political topics and events or political leaders.

I believe this is a good example of political speech expressed in social media because it is showing an actual event taking place. In countries that are normally not able to express themselves are now utilizing social media to do so.

Week 11 discussion question:

How is political speech expressed in social media? Provide some examples that you have seen, or been involved in.

Political speech can be anything from discussing the application of a specific political issue to the endorsement or insult of a political party.  It’s everywhere.  So it makes sense that it would be on social media too.  YouTube posts about political debates are a good example.  Like the ones that are posted below this foreign policy debate between Obama and Romney (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tecohezcA78).  The posters appear to be getting pretty agitated with opposing points of view.  I don’t normally read the commentary, but the user “lg15flat” typing “maybe if u stop using cold logic & start using morals u will see things differently” seems pretty aggressive to me.

Week 11 Discussion Question

How is political speech expressed in social media? Provide some examples that you have seen, or been involved in.

I feel that many people use social media as an outlet of some sort.  It is definitely used as an outlet for political opinions during the election season.  What I find interesting with what I see about political social media comments and statuses is that they are often rash and not thought through.  If you are using a commercial media source such as television or newspapers, etc. you are much more likely to think through what you are stating before you just throw it out there.  However, social media is a very spontaneous medium that allows people to post their thoughts as they scroll through their heads.  I think that this change into a more spontaneous form can cause complications as well as provide a more real outlet for thoughts.  This way people can say exactly what they are think but at the same time such thoughts can cause conflict between friends.

Week 10 Discussion Question

Which form of convergence media do I understand the least?  Well I would have to say multi-platform media.  This one is just so indepth I think it is hard to really understand just how far it does go.  Multi-platform media is a way of saying that media is no longer limited to billboards and newspapers.  You have online and TV advertisements, flyers, emails, even text messages at the finger tips of everyone who has an opinion to express.  It is crazy to look around and see just how immersed we are in everyone else’s advertisements and marketing strategies.  I think this has the biggest effect on me and others by making us think less about it.  If someone walks up to you and directly trys to sell or promote a product you can immediately pick out what they are doing.  Where as when we are constantly surrounded we aren’t able to distinguish the marketing strategies from all the other advertising noise around us.

Week 10 Discussion Question

Which of the five types of convergence media do you understand least – and how does it affect you?

By: Shelly F.

Of the five types of convergence media I understand multi-platform convergence media the least.  My understanding is that it’s more like a business deal than a partnership.  The companies don’t merge, but they agree to utilize each other’s resources.  In biology they call this a symbiotic relationship.  Each benefits from the other in some way.  So the movie preview of The Hobbit posted on YouTube by collider.com (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0k3kHtyoqc), which is owned by Top Lingo Development, would be a good example of this because YouTube gets site traffic and Top Lingo Development gets a movie promotion.  This affects me in that the same message could be presented while being funded for the purpose of producing different outcomes.

Which of the five types of convergence media do you understand least – and how does it affect you?

The type of convergence media I understand the least is Multi-Platform media.

This affects me in a  way I had never realized. For example all the reality TV shows, like Jersey shore, it has been a series of multi-platform with its world-wide media events that are aired on TV, it has been linked to cultural aspects, broadcasting, internet, advertising, and marketing. It starts off as the traditional free media and as it progresses, DVD series are made, dolls are made, clothing with quotes are made and it goes on and on. This shows how it is affecting me because I had never really realized that a TV show could be multi-platform. This is something I experience yet never realized that I was experiencing a version of multi-platform media.
